How do I cater my content to social media trends?

You can cater your content to social media trends by ensuring you are aware of the content that your audience is consuming. This can be done through manual research and utilising a number of tools that I will discuss further below.

Catering your content to trending topics on social media can be an important tool in keeping your brand ahead of the competition. It also can provide a better understanding of your audience and make the content you produce more interesting and relevant to your followers.

Social media is like a vortex. Trends, hashtags, social interaction, it is this whirlwind of activity at all hours of the day and night, all over the world. Keeping track of social media trends on various platforms can be a big challenge, especially because they change so rapidly.

Trend monitoring is important for any business. For marketers and community managers, joining a conversation in a timely matter means you are able to add something to the conversation. There may be trends within your industry that dictate product development.

Create your own accounts and be a top detective! One of the keys to discovery is to create a personal account, not use your business account, since the goal is to see how consumers just like you are interacting online. When you are analysing and engaging online, try to consider the following questions:

  1. Are interactions more formal or informal?
  2. What kinds of content are people sharing?
  3. How often does content get shared?
  4. How are users engaging with each other?

These are just some of the questions you can ask yourself to help find content that is trending.

Keeping in mind the questions above, here is how to access the trends in each of the below social platforms.

There are two ways of discovering trends on Twitter: Moments, and personalised trends. Moments are curated stories showcasing the very best of what’s happening on Twitter. The Moments guide is customised to show current topics that are popular or relevant, allowing you to discover what social trends on Twitter in an instant.

Personalised trends are available to those with a twitter account, and can be found on the left-hand side of the page. These trends are based on an algorithm that determines your location and who you follow. You can also find trends in other markets for targeted or local marketing by simply changing the location.

When using Instagram, trends are personalised by an algorithm – the limitation to this being that if you don’t follow the “right” people, you might miss what is trending!

Each Facebook NewsFeed has a tailored Trending section. The content displayed depends on each user’s likes, follows, and activity. Facebook has grouped the trending stories including:

  • top trends
  • politics
  • science and tech
  • sports
  • and entertainment.

YouTube features trending videos, accessed in the main menu. At the bottom of the page, you can change your country to see what’s trending in other locations.

Google Trends

Google Trends is a very useful tool! It allows you to enter a search term and view the historic number of searches on a graph. The landing page has a list of stories, along with the search terms associated with that story. It has a graph with a timeframe to show you the velocity of the trend. Clicking on the story shows sample news stories, geographic breakdown, search and news history, and related topics.

Buzzfeed is dominating the online world with content on various platforms. It can be described as the pulse of pop-culture and they have their own Trending page that is a great place to see what content is trending.

BuzzSumo is an online tool for discovering popular and trending content, influencers, and backlinks. The trending stories are organized into different categories and have a trending score to indicate how quickly they are being shared. The ability to search for any topic and then filter by date range gives you another option for uncovering trends.  All you have to do is enter a topic or keyword in the search bar to see results.
